St Michael’s Mount is visible from Penzance. It’s about a 4 mile walk, which was more than we were up for, so we took the bus.
During low tide you can walk from Marazion to St Michael’s Mount via the causeway. Otherwise you need to take a small boat. The causeway has uneven cobbles so watch your step.
Here you can see the harbor on the island.
The castle at the top of the hill naturally draws the eye. We chose not to climb the hill to the castle. There’s a fee to enter the castle. The island itself is free.
Down near the causeway there are cottages. About 30 people live on the island. There’s also a cafe.
Here are some of the stone structures on the island.
Looking back to Marazion on the shore from the island. We’d have liked to see what it looked like at high tide but didn’t want to hang around that long. There are other dining options and bars on shore.
St Michael’s Mount was once owned by the abbey of Mont St-Michel in Normandy. We were there in April 2025. The silhouettes are similar, though Mont St-Michel is larger and has a causeway not dependent on the tides.
We caught the bus back to Penzance in Marazion, where we saw this bright floral mural.
