We started our trek on the Waikawa Track, near the marina. We followed that until we hit the road to the Snout Track parking area. That part of the trail was shared use, walking and cycling, and was level, sunny, and open, then woodsy. We then followed the road up to the parking area. The road is steep and there is no designated path, but there was little traffic.
There are great water views from the parking area. We watched an excursion boat head out.
Initially the Snout Track is shared use and wide, like a service road. You can see both sides of the ridge from the trail.
We followed it to where it split into the Snout Track walking trail and the Kanuka mountain bike trail. The trails were well posted and easy to follow.
Rather than retrace our steps, we took the other road down to a spur trail that connects to the Bob’s Bay Track. The spur trail was steep, with high steps. I was glad to have trekking poles. Once we hit the Bob’s Bay Track it leveled out. We took the upper track.
Along the way was a bench dedicated to the man who dug the original track by hand. I bet he wanted a bench when he was done. Maybe a beer or two.
Cicadas were everywhere and incredibly loud. There’s also kind of cool to look at. We got a good close up of a couple, plus a golden molting cicada.
Once you start seeing the harbor you know you’re near the end. Our walk ended up being a little over 5 miles roundtrip. We were tired at the end, but not exhausted.
