Krabi Town

We stayed in Krabi Town thinking it would be more convenient for day trips and continuing to Koh Lanta but Ao Nang would be a good option also.

Day 1: Khao Sok to Krabi Town

We started our day at Elephant Hills lake camp in Khao Sok National Park. The Elephant Hills package included our two-hour van trip to Krabi Town. We checked into our hotel and booked our transfer to Koh Lanta through the hotel. Then we walked to Viva for very good pizza. We only had one beer because we were tired and full. We decided on a Hong Island day trip while we’re here.

Day 2: Riverside Walk

The breakfast buffet was varied but not that good. We’ve been spoiled at our last two destinations. We booked our day trip this morning only to discover they were overbooked for Hong Island so we ended up with Koh Phi Phi for the same price.

We’d read the walk along the river was pleasant so we did that. We got to catch the crab statue while is wasn’t crawling with other tourists, and while it was.

We saw other statues along the waterfront, like this bird and fish.

We also saw lots of longtail boats and were solicited multiple times to take a mangrove tour, which is common here. We didn’t take anyone up on it because we’ve kayaked mangroves before.

We stopped at a random small bar to have a couple of beers and relax for a while. We found this yellow flowering tree pretty and Steve needed a photo of the British bike to rent.

For dinner we headed for the Black Crab night market. The Krabi area has multiple markets; this one was closest to our hotel. We had Thai kebabs, chicken doner kebab — I missed my doner kebab in Istanbul so figured I’d have it here — and beer from the well-named Friendly Bar in the market, where you can bring your food to eat. We got delicious brownies for dessert on the way out. There are so many options at the markets it’s difficult to decide!

It was Chinese New Year yesterday so we assume that’s what the street decorations are for but who knows? Maybe they’re always here. We expected a lot of noise last night but didn’t hear anything.

Day 3: Koh Phi Phi Day Trip

The pool here at the hotel made a pleasant sight at breakfast. We didn’t try the pool.

Today was our Koh Phi Phi day trip. We enjoyed it and the scenery is beautiful but unless you’re a fan of crowds or the movie The Beach there are probably better options.

You don’t have to go out to the islands for interesting rock formations. They’re on the mainland too, like here on our songthaew ride back to our hotel. After a big lunch on our tour we didn’t need dinner. We had some of our new local cocktail: Hong Thong (a kind of local whisky/rum) and Coke Zero.

Lodging

Our room at the Krabi Sea Bass was comfortable. Nice shower. Breakfast was just okay, but we’ve just come from two places with great breakfast. A little on the edge of town but quiet. Didn’t try the restaurant (other than breakfast) or pool. Or our tiny balcony.

Dining

We had pizza at Viva downtown, which was very good, and at the Black Crab night market, which had some interesting options but was not overly large. Sometimes too many choices makes it harder!

Transportation

Our transportation to Krabi Town was provided by Elephant Hills. We booked a shared van onto Koh Lanta. We were able to walk everywhere in town.
