Fram Museum

The Fram Museum centers on the polar ship Fram. You can explore the interior, the exterior, and surrounding exhibits.

We started by climbing to the top and walking around the ship. They used visuals and audio to effectively mimic a ship at sea.

The interior has been reconstructed with cabin furnishings, belongings, and wax figures.

The hold and mechanical areas are open too, as are communal spaces.

Related information is interspersed, like this display on knots. There are some ladders to climb and some confined spaces, so some mobility is needed.

Displays in the surrounding museum cover the people involved, maps of the voyages, and examples of equipment. It’s hard to imagine being in those surroundings in that weather for months at a time. The displays help with visualization.

We joke that when you want to find the exit to a museum, look for the gift shop, because you always exit through the gift shop. Here they’re just transparent about it. (Full disclosure: Museum gift shops are often good shopping experiences.)
