Falmouth

We spent four nights in Falmouth, a nice base for exploring the area. We didn't get out of town and still enjoyed our stay.

Day 1: Exeter to Falmouth

There were train travel disruptions for a few hours today. We were able to get an earlier train so it didn’t impact our schedule. It was raining in Falmouth so we got to try out the “raincoats” Steve made for our carry-ons. They worked well; our stuff stayed pretty dry. There’s a nice view from our place.

We went to The Boathouse for our first Sunday Roast. (we’ll be having that every Sunday we’re here. Today I had lamb and Steve had beef sirloin.) Very good as was our orange caramel cheesecake dessert. Then we walked to Spar for some chocolate cake for breakfast and some Thatchers Haze cider for tonight since we had dinner early, it being Sunday roast.

Day 2: Pendennis Castle Walk

It was a jacket on/off kind of day, with rain and wind in patches. We walked over to the castle but not in it (too pricey), then down toward the beach but not to it (too wet).

The High Street is cute. Lots of shops and such and pedestrian friendly. We got pistachio croissant and carrot cake for breakfast from a bakery, plus some cider for later.

We went back to The Boathouse for fish pie, which was even better than it sounded. Besides great food and service, there’s a lovely view.

Day 3: A Sailing Race Goes By

I didn’t feel good today so we did … nothing, pretty much. We went to Pizza Jockeys for some pizza with a really nice crust.

We did have the Flushing sailing race go by to liven up our day a little. Lots of colorful sails. There was also a Viking cruise ship in port. That was less exciting.

Day 4: Falmouth Town Walk

We did another walk today in the mizzle (somewhere between mist and drizzle), across the peninsula and around Swanpool.

Falmouth is a pleasant place to spend a few days. We’d planned to explore the surrounding area more. The weather kept us closer to home but we still enjoyed our stay. There was enough to keep us occupied in town.

Essentials

Lodging

We enjoyed our stay at the Star & Garter. The location at the end of the High Street was central but quiet and the view was nice too. Spacious and clean. However, there was no fridge as described in the listing. When I inquired about it I was told they had removed them because people complained they were too loud, but they could bring one the following day if I wanted. I said yes please and then heard nothing more from them. I hate giving a low rating but if you’re going to change something please update the listing. I travel with medication that requires refrigeration. It isn’t just that I want to keep my cider cold!

Dining

We like The Boathouse so much we ate there three times. I would recommend booking; they get busy. We also liked our pizza at Pizza Jockeys. There are lots of other places to eat in Falmouth.

Transportation

We took the train in and out. Falmouth is connected to the main line at Truro. There’s no station at Falmouth. We walked everywhere around Falmouth.
