Exeter Cathedral

Exeter cathedral is not as ostentatious as some that we've seen. It's still beautiful and has some interesting features.

It’s set within a grassy square so you can get enough distance to take in the exterior. Sometimes a cathedral is so hemmed in by other buildings that’s not possible.

The ceiling is the longest uninterrupted medieval stone vaulted ceiling in the world. There’s still some old stained glass, despite World War II damage (now fixed).

The organ has 4000 pipes. The longest pipe (separate from the bulk of the organ) is 36 feet long.

Some of the features include a medieval minstrels’ gallery, an astronomical clock, and a timeline, the Exeter Rondels, that wraps around the inside of the cathedral, done in needlepoint. I cannot fathom the effort that went into that!

One of the ceiling bosses depicts the murder of Thomas Becket. A mirror on a stand lets you see it without having to crank your neck backwards. Also on display is a four foot life size replica of a ceiling boss in papier mâché, so you can appreciate how large they really are.

The cathedral has some elaborate tombs, including this one that still has its medieval paint.
