Dettifoss

Dettifoss is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. It's a longish detour to get there but worthwhile, and on a day when there weren't many detours.

The road to Dettifoss goes through a flat lunar landscape. Once you reach the parking area its a fairly long hike to the waterfall. Parts of it are rocky. I could have used hiking poles on the walk to and around the falls, though I got along fine without them. You get a glimpse of a bonus waterfall along the way.

There are upper and lower viewpoints once you reach the falls.

We didn’t go down to the lower viewpoint.

The upper viewpoint is reached via a narrower trail. This is one place we could have used our rain pants. It rained lightly while we were there, plus the waterfall kicks up a lot of spray. We could have used the rain pants for that alone.

But it wasn’t raining that hard when we set out so we didn’t wear them. Since it was raining we skipped the lower viewpoint. We did however take advantage of the toilets at the parking area, the last ones until Egilsstaðir.
