If you want to see the Balanced Rock, you need to go all the way to the end of the trail. But it’s a pretty hike even if you don’t manage that.
These two areas are on the east side of Big Bend National Park. While scenic, we preferred the west side.
The River Road is a scenic drive near, though not in, Big Bend National Park. There’s not much but the road and the views. And a few locals who want to drive much faster than you.
This hike is about the journey, not the destination. Gorgeous desert scenery. Little shade. Good thing it was cool the day we hiked.
Even if you don’t plan on hiking Santa Elena canyon at the end of the road, it’s worth driving Ross Maxwell road in Big Bend National Park for the scenery along the way.
Santa Elena canyon is dramatic and well worth the steep climb at the beginning and some rocky cliff edges.
The Window trail at Big Bend is a beautiful hike even if you don’t go all the way to the trail’s end. Beware the uphill coming back!
