Mont St-Michel Abbey

Mont St-Michel Abbey with sun behind it

It takes some effort to reach the abbey. Once there there is a maze of beautiful empty rooms. We didn’t use the audio guide, just the printed pamphlet.

Mont St-Michel

Mont St-Michel at dusk

If you’ve seen photos of Mont St-Michel you’ve seen the highlights already. 1 night fit easily enough into our itinerary. I don’t know that I’d go out of the way for it.

Bayeux Cathedral

Bayeux Cathedral at dusk

The Bayeux cathedral dominates the middle of town and makes a good reference point while walking around. The inside is also worth seeing and is free.

D-Day Tour

slab of rock off seacliff

Our tour of the Omaha and Utah beaches had a nice balance of overall strategy and tactics plus personal details from different sites.

Bayeux

cathedral with flowering trees

Bayeux is a nice walkable town with a cathedral and proximity to D-Day sites. It would have made a nice first stop in France had we not gone to Honfleur. We spent 3 nights there.

St Catherine’s Church

wooden church interior

Église Sainte Catherine is one of the oldest and largest wooden churches in France. It’s worth a quick visit inside, especially if you run into a rainy day like we did.

Garden of Personalities

bust of man in hat

This garden isn’t worth going out of your way for, but if you’re in the area it makes a nice walk and it made an interesting alternative to retracing our steps along the seawall pathway.

Honfleur

old harbor with colorful buildings

I chose Honfleur for our first stop because I knew we would we tired and jetlagged and Honfleur was described as a town great for wandering, without a lot of must-see sights. That sounded perfect for our first 4 nights.
